Canadian strongman Mitchell Hooper has won the 2023 World’s Strongest Man (WSM) competition, held from April 19 to April 23 in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. This victory confirmed the speculation of many fans who believed that Hooper is the next big star in strongman. Hooper’s victory was hard-fought and well-deserved, given that he was a last-minute replacement pick in 2022, where he finished eighth.
Amazingly, the 2022 World’s Strongest Man was not only Hooper’s first WSM appearance, but his first international competition of his professional career. However, he made a statement by winning the group stage and finishing eighth overall, wowing strongman fans.
After his impressive international debut, Hooper continued his blitz by placing on the podium at the 2022 Giants Live Strongman Classic, World Open, and Shaw Classic. He then went on to win the 2022 Arnold Strongman Classic UK, The Giants Live World Tour Finals, placed third at the 2022 Rogue Strongman Invitational, and, most notably, won the 2023 Arnold Strongman Classic in Ohio.
The final leaderboard for the 2023 World’s Strongest Man competition had Hooper in first place, with Tom Stoltman (United Kingdom) in second place and Oleksii Novikov (Ukraine) in third place. Trey Mitchell (United States), Evan Singleton (United States), Pavlo Kordiyaka (Ukraine), Brian Shaw (United States), Luke Stoltman (United Kingdom), Matthew Ragg (New Zealand), and Jaco Schoonwinkel (South Africa), who withdrew on the contest’s last day, completed the leaderboard.
Despite facing his biggest struggle on day three of the 2023 WSM, where he placed sixth in Fingal’s Fingers, Hooper proved that he could hang with the veterans of the sport and previous WSM winners. The Fingers event challenged each of the nine finalists to lift and topple five massive wooden pillars as quickly as possible. Two-time World’s Strongest Man T. Stoltman (2021, 2022) and 2022 Rogue Invitational winner O. Novikov crushed the competition, leaving Mitchell, Kordiyaka, Singleton, and Hooper between them.
Hooper’s victory at the 2023 World’s Strongest Man is not only a landmark for Canadian strongman, but it also signals a new era for the sport. His performances show that you do not need twenty years of training under your lifting belt to be a winning strongman athlete; you just need the correct mix of raw talent, a dauntless work ethic, and a good day on the field. Furthermore, Hooper’s win makes him the first Canadian to win any WSM and the fifth Canadian ever to podium after Tom Magee, Dominic Filiou, JF Caron, and Maxime Boudreault.
In summary, Mitchell Hooper’s victory at the 2023 World’s Strongest Man was well-deserved and confirmed that he is the next big thing in strongman. His win not only marked a landmark for Canadian strongman but also signaled a new era for the sport. It is clear that Hooper’s performances have shown that age and experience are not always the keys to winning in strongman; raw talent, a dauntless work ethic, and a good day on the field can take you to the top.
